What is Spot the Deepfake?

Spot the Deepfake (coming in August) is a quiz designed to teach people about deepfakes in a fun but challenging way. Spot the Deepfake lets people engage directly with several different examples of deepfakes so they can familiarize themselves with this sophisticated new technology and understand some of the potential opportunities and threats it may pose. But more than that, Spot the Deepfake is meant to remind people that understanding the context of media is often more important than simply looking at a video or image. By the end of the ten-question quiz, people should be familiar with what deepfakes are, why they are created, and have an idea of strategies they can use to identify deepfakes by doing more than just looking at a piece of media.

Why did we create Spot the Deepfake?
Deepfake technology is relatively new but has already been used around the world for both good and ill. The effect of synthetic media that looks and sounds real could be immense if people do not know of its existence and understand what it is and what to look out for. Our goal is to give power to the public as they engage with new forms of manipulated media. We are particularly concerned about the possible influence of deepfakes in the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

Who is the team behind Spot the Deepfake?
Spot the Deepfake is a collaborative project created by a team from the University of Washington’s Center for an Informed Public (CIP) and MicrosoftDeeptrace and USA TODAY were also partners in the project.

DATA COLLECTION AND COMPLIANCE

The Center for an Informed Public is committed to respecting users’ rights to data privacy and protection. We are committed to the principles inherent in the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) and aim to be transparent with regard to what data we collect and how it is used. We aim to ensure that all data collected is stored safely and securely and only ever used for lawful, fair, necessary and specific purposes.

As part of a continuous effort to improve the effectiveness of Spot the Deepfake as a learning resource we are collecting anonymized data about how people interact with the site. We will also be using the data to better understand how people engage with deepfakes in conjunction with a voluntary survey at the end of the Spot the Deepfake quiz. We will be collecting the following data about how people use the Spot the Deepfake quiz:

    • Time spent on each question
    • Time taken to complete the whole quiz
    • Number of questions answered correctly/incorrectly
    • Which answers are chosen the most/least often
    • How often Hints are opened
    • How many times additional resources are accessed
    • How users of the quiz accessed the quiz
    • When users leave the quiz
    • How and where users share the quiz
