CIP’s Invited Speaker Series continues on Feb. 23 with UNC-Chapel Hill associate professor Deen Freelon

As part of the Center for an Informed Public’s ongoing Invited Speaker Series, Deen Freelon, an associate professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media, is scheduled to speak about “Hashtag heroes vs. disinfo dystopia: The left, the right, and the truth about social media activism,” on Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 9:30 a.m. PST. 

The CIP’s Invited Speaker Series, which has previously featured St. John’s University School of Law assistant professor Kate Klonick; Syracuse University professor Jennifer Stromer-Galley; and University of California-Irvine associate professor Cailin O’Connor, will be held virtually via Zoom and is open to the public.   

Freelon studies political uses of social media and other digital technologies. He is also a principal researcher for UNC’s interdisciplinary Center for Information, Technology, and Public Life (CITAP). He has authored or co-authored more than 50 journal articles, book chapters and public reports, in addition to co-editing one scholarly book. An expert in multiple programming languages including R, Python, and PHP, Freelon has written research-grade software applications for a range of computational research purposes. He formerly taught at American University in Washington, D.C.
