CIP Faculty and Research Fellows



The Center for an Informed Public at the University of Washington is currently accepting applications for CIP Faculty and Research Fellows. UW faculty and research scientists interested in becoming a CIP-affiliated Faculty member or Research Fellow should complete this application form (which includes submitting .pdf files containing a current CV and a Statement of Interest). The application deadline is Dec. 31, 2023. 

The Statement of Interest should respond to the following three questions. Responses to each question should be approximately 300 words; the statement should not exceed 1,500 words total.

  1. How does your work connect to the research, education, policy and/or engagement mission of the CIP? Please describe the problems you are trying to solve; outline the approaches which might inform your work; and tell us about the communities you aim to serve through the work.
  2. Why is being affiliated with the UW Center for an Informed Public right for you and your goals? How do you plan to meet the responsibilities of this appointment? Please share your thoughts on: how the opportunity to engage with the CIP community might stimulate your work; which perspectives you seek to help fill any underdeveloped areas of your work; what skills, connections, and insights you are uniquely suited to contribute to the Center’s community and activities; and how you plan to meet the expectations of this appointment (please review the CIP Faculty and Research Fellow Guidelines listed below for more information).

Guidelines for CIP Faculty and Research Fellows

Eligibility 

  • University of Washington faculty and research scientists. 
  • Alignment of research interests and activities with the CIP mission. 

Appointment 

  • CIP Faculty and Research Fellow appointments have a tenure of 2 years, with eligibility to renew affiliation. 
  • Appointments will be voted on by the CIP Executive Council, based on application review. 
  • Appointments are limited and competitive. 

Responsibilities 

  • Attend a yearly CIP all-hands meeting. 
  • Supervise, as a primary and/or co-advisor CIP Postdoctoral Fellows, PhD students, graduate research assistants, and other student researchers. 
  • Present at and regularly attend the CIP Speaker Series
  • Available and willing to serve on ad hoc committees in support of the CIP’s mission. Faculty and Research Fellows will be asked to serve on between at least one and at most 2 ad hoc committees per year. Commitment may vary depending on the charge of the committee. 
  • Submit a short report about CIP-related activities at the end of the appointment for CIP reporting purposes. 
  • Encouraged to participate in collaborative research with other CIP Faculty and Research Fellows and develop competitive research proposals. 
  • Acknowledge CIP affiliation and support on relevant conference presentations and research products. As mentioned below, the CIP hosts a variety of events each year.
  • If at all possible, plan to attend the annual CIP Award for Impact & Excellence event.

Benefits 

  • CIP Faculty and Research Fellows are eligible to apply for the CIP Innovation Fund, a research fund designed to provide seed funds, support pilot projects, and other activities in support of the CIP’s mission. Innovation Fund awardees are strongly encouraged to use funds to support the development of CIP competitive proposals that will be submitted to external funders. 
  • CIP Faculty and Research Fellows are eligible to apply to utilize CIP research infrastructure including data collection infrastructure, use of existing datasets, collaboration with CIP data engineer to support research, etc. 
  • CIP Faculty and Research Fellows will be invited to participate in a variety of CIP social events, including happy hours, fundraising events, workshops, grand challenges, etc. 
  • CIP will commit to promote relevant CIP Faculty and Research Fellow work through its communication channels.
